This year, National Hurricane Preparedness Week runs from May 1 - 7. The 2022 hurricane season runs from June 1 - November 1, 2022, and now is the time to evaluate your own personal hurricane risk.

While the last hurricane that directly impacted Tallahassee was Hurricane Michael back in October 2018, it’s important to be prepared for any possible threats to the area.

Here are several things to do to get you and your family and friends ready for the upcoming hurricane season in Tallahassee.

Outline or revise your hurricane evacuation plan — If you already have a hurricane evacuation plan from last year, make any necessary changes to it so that it is as updated and relevant to your current situation as possible.

Take inventory of your hurricane supplies — Now is the time to look through your hurricane supplies and ensure that you have what you need for hurricane season. You can find a full list of basic natural disaster supplies to have ready by visiting the Florida Divison of Emergency Management online. 

Check with your insurance — The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration suggests checking in with your insurance company to ensure that you have enough homeowner’s insurance and coverage for any other high-value items that may get damaged during the season.

Request a tree inspection — Trees tend to fall or get seriously damaged during storms in Tallahassee, and now is the time to request an inspection from a local tree service company to see if any trees pose a risk to your home and family this hurricane season.

Check in with family and friends — Reach out to your family and friends to see if they are preparing for the 2022 hurricane season as well.
